Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt

I've jumped on board the Scrappy Trip Around the World bus or jet plane.  I made my first block yesterday and OMG it was so much fun.  I have another one nearly done...but I'm so time poor...my scrappy trip is going to be more like a slow boat around the world, but hey, that's ok, I get to savour every step of the journey.  No whistle-stop tours for me! I like to immerse myself in the different cultures of the world...so if I manage a block a week, I think that's close to a year to have enough blocks to make a quilt?

My trip has started in Iceland.  As I made the block, I thought about what the colours in the block made me think of - as in which country they brought to mind.  I settled on Iceland for my first.  Not sure why, I've never been there, but I thought the grey reminded me of the volcanic rock and the bleak landscapes I've seen and the green for the very green grass when it's not covered in snow.  they have those grass roofed houses there. The orange because I recall seeing bursts of colour in their buildings, mainly their rooves and also because I'm sure in Spring some beautiful wildflowers pop up and add colour and the birds chirp away. I imagine you hear the sound of seagulls a lot in Iceland. Perhaps one day I'll see it for myself...until then I'm happy with my thoughts and block making. Very happy.

Another quilt off the UFO list!

Bravo me!  What a great feeling it is to finish and stand back and admire my latest quilt.  I love that feeling.  Love it, love it, love it. 

This one has been a WIP for YEEEAAAARRR's.  It's my Flea Market Fancy quilt made up to a pattern in the first Material Obsession book.

I'm thrilled with it...the binding just finishes the whole quilt off perfectly!

With no one around to hold the quilt up I improvised this morning...here are a few different perspective shots.

I started this quilt either in or before February 2010 and it was actually finished as a quilt top then...that's over 2 years ago.... so worth the wait.....

It's such a gorgeous fabric range, isn't it.  I wanted to show off big squares of it.

Now only 6 7 works in progress to complete... how many will I get done this year....

there's the Retro Squared, Cowgirl Rodeo, Wedding, Liberty lines, Russian dolls and a floral....

Russian Doll Quilt

I purchased the sashing fabric for my Russian Doll Quilt a week ago and had a quick play with it.  All the blocks are a different size as they have grown organically, so their "placement" will be random, not uniform, with different widths of sashing fabric between the blocks.  I'm inspired by all the modern quilts such as those in Block Party of which I am the proud owner of!

The fabric is linen blend which I thinks complements the organicness of the blocks.  The spots marry nicely with the doll's cheek (y) dots.  

Another one of my years-in-the-making quilts is a tiny step closer to being finished. 

I picked up three quilts from the machine quilter - I mentioned that already but here's a pic of my pile :)  I will reveal more as time goes by.  They are my black and white, kaffe fasset's floral parade and my flea market fancy quilts.
